IELTS Writing Checker
Check your IELTS Writing against the four official criteria
Answer an original Task 1 or Task 2 prompt and get a band estimate with the reasons behind it — which sentences capped each criterion, and what to change before you resubmit.
No card needed. Your first Writing evaluation is free.
What the checker actually grades
IELTS examiners do not mark essays out of ten. They score four published criteria separately, and your Writing band is their average. The checker grades the same four.
Task Response
Did you answer the question that was asked — every part of it — with a clear position and developed ideas? This is where memorised essays and one-sided answers lose bands.
Coherence & Cohesion
Does the essay progress logically, with paragraphs that each do one job? Overusing linking words costs marks here as surely as having none.
Lexical Resource
Range and precision of vocabulary — not rarity. A common word used exactly outscores an impressive word used almost correctly.
Grammatical Range & Accuracy
The mix of structures you attempt and the error rate you hold. Nine simple sentences in a row cap this criterion no matter how correct they are.
What the feedback actually looks like
Most tools hand you a number. The number is the least useful part — this is the rest of it.
- Coherence & Cohesion6.0
- Paragraphs 2 and 3 both open with "Furthermore". Your linking words mark that a sentence is coming, but not how it relates to the last one — which is what holds a 6 back from a 7.
- Lexical Resource6.5
- "Very important" appears four times. Band 7 needs less common vocabulary used naturally: "critical", "pivotal", "a decisive factor" would each fit here.
- Task Response7.0
- Both parts of the question are addressed and your position is clear throughout. This criterion is not what is holding you back.
- Grammatical Range6.5
- Nine of your fourteen sentences are simple or compound. The ideas are correct; the structures carrying them are not varied enough yet.
How it works
- 1
Answer a task
Pick up an original Task 1 or Task 2 prompt from the practice library and write your response in the editor.
- 2
Get the report
A band estimate per criterion with the reasons behind each one — down to the sentences that held a criterion back.
- 3
Fix and resubmit
Revise against the feedback, submit the same task again, and compare the two reports criterion by criterion.
An estimate, not an official result
The band you get here is an AI estimate graded against the published assessment criteria — not an official IELTS result, and not produced by a certified examiner. Treat it as a guide to what to fix, which is what it is good at, rather than a prediction of your exam day. The feedback, not the number, is the useful part.

Questions about the writing checker
Is the band score official?
No. It is an AI estimate graded against the published assessment criteria — not an official IELTS result and not produced by a certified examiner. It is a guide to what to fix, not a prediction of your exam day.
How many checks are free?
A free account includes 1 AI-graded Writing evaluation (and 1 Speaking evaluation), with no card needed. Paid plans remove the limit.
Which writing tasks can I check?
IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 reports and Task 2 essays. Prompts come from an original practice library — no past papers — and both task types are graded on the same four criteria.
What feedback do I get beyond a band?
A band per criterion — Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy — with the reasons behind each, including the specific sentences and habits that held a criterion back. You can revise and resubmit the same task to compare reports.
Is this just a grammar checker?
No. Grammar is one criterion of four. The checker also grades whether you answered the whole question, how the essay is organised, and the range and precision of your vocabulary — the criteria a spell-checker cannot see.
