IELTS Listening practice

IELTS Listening practice with audio that plays once, like the exam

Original recordings and the real question types, scored against the answer key. No pause, no rewind, no second listen — because on the day there is not one.

No account, no card, no email. One full Section 1, scored instantly.

Why practice that replays does not prepare you

Most free Listening practice is an audio file you control. That trains a skill the exam never tests. Four things here work the way the test works instead.

The recording plays once

There is no play button to press twice, no pause, no rewind and no seek bar — and once a clip has finished, it will not start again. You read the questions, you listen, and you commit, exactly as you will have to.

Spelling and numbers are marks

An answer you heard correctly and spelled wrong scores nothing, and dates, prices and phone numbers each have their own conventions. More marks leak here than to anything you failed to hear.

The distractors are in the script

Speakers correct themselves, change their minds and mention the wrong option first. The answer is usually the second thing said about a detail, not the first — which is only a trap if you are writing while you listen.

Four sections, rising difficulty

An everyday conversation, then a monologue, then a discussion between several speakers, then an academic lecture. Section 1 is where the free practice starts; the later sections are where accents and speed start to matter.

How it works

  1. 1

Read the questions, then press play

The questions are on screen before the audio starts, so you choose when to begin. The player then runs the recording straight through, once.

  2. 2

    Answer as you listen

Questions follow the recording in order, in the same player paying users get. Answers are typed as you go, not reconstructed from memory afterwards.

  3. 3

    Check every answer

Your answers go against the key the moment you submit, each with an explanation of where the recording settles it, and an estimated band from your raw score.

What practice audio cannot copy

The recordings are original and AI-generated — not past papers — and the voices and accents vary the way the test’s do, but a quiet room at home is not a test centre with headphones, forty questions and a transfer time at the end. The band is an estimate too: your raw score converted with a fixed table, while the official test shifts its conversion slightly from paper to paper, so read it as a close range. The single play is the one exam condition that is copied exactly, and it is the one that changes how you practise.

Questions about Listening practice

Can I replay the audio?

No, and that is deliberate. Each recording plays once, with no pause, rewind or seek, and it cannot be started again afterwards — the same conditions as the exam. You can always start a new session with a different recording.

Is the Listening practice really free?

One full Section 1 is free with no account at all — no card, no email. A free account adds 1 Listening practice session every day, plus the Reading and Listening diagnostic and a study plan; paid plans remove the daily limit and add full practice tests.

Are these real IELTS recordings?

No. Every recording and question here is original and AI-generated, written to the IELTS Listening format — not past papers. AIelts is an independent preparation service and is not affiliated with the British Council, IDP or Cambridge.

Which question types come up?

The Listening set: form, note, table and sentence completion, multiple choice and multiple select, matching, and map or diagram labelling. Your results break the score down by type, so you can see whether completion or matching is the problem.

Is the Listening test the same for Academic and General Training?

Yes — Listening is identical for both, so this practice applies either way. The rest of the product is built for IELTS Academic.

What if the audio does not play?

Check the volume dial in the player and your device output — the player has a volume control and nothing else, by design. Headphones are worth using here: the exam gives you a pair.

Practise the way the test actually runs

Start with one full Section 1, free and without an account. If you want the full picture, the free Reading and Listening diagnostic turns your results into a study plan for your exam date.
