How long does it take to go from band 7 to band 8?
The jump from 7 to 8 is harder than 6 to 7 and fails for different reasons. What has to change per skill, and how to tell if it is worth chasing.
Study timelineGeneralUpdated 7 min read
Band 7 is reachable with technique. Band 8 is not: it is a consistency score, and consistency is the slowest thing in language learning to buy. The honest planning figure is roughly 200 to 240 hours of instruction per half band on average — the study behind that number is unpacked in how long band 6 to 7 takes — and above band 6 the curve flattens. So the first thing to settle is not the schedule. It is whether you need an 8 at all.
What band 8 demands that band 7 does not
Read the public descriptors side by side and they say something specific: band 7 tolerates recurring weaknesses as long as the target features are there, while band 8 tolerates only occasional lapses. You are no longer adding skills. You are removing failures.
| Skill | Band 7 in practice | Band 8 in practice | What actually has to change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | Roughly 30 correct out of 40 on published guidance, so about ten errors are survivable | Roughly 35 out of 40, so about five | Your error tolerance halves. Every dropped plural, misheard number and abandoned Part 4 gap now costs a band step, not a mark |
| Reading | Roughly 30 out of 40 in Academic Reading | Roughly 35 out of 40 | Same arithmetic. The items separating 30 from 35 are the ones you currently guess: NOT GIVEN, matching information, the last five you never reach |
| Writing | Task Achievement (Task 1) or Task Response (Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy all at 7, with noticeable but non-fatal weaknesses in any of them | The same four criteria averaging 8, with only occasional inaccuracies and the majority of sentences error-free | Criteria are awarded in whole bands and averaged, so a strong criterion can still carry a weak one: 9 / 9 / 7 / 7 averages 8 and reports as band 8, while 8 / 8 / 8 / 7 averages 7.75 and reports as 7.5. The lowest criterion is the binding constraint |
| Speaking | Fluent at length with some repetition and self-correction, range visible | Fluent with only occasional repetition, hesitation that is content-related rather than language-related, vocabulary and structures used flexibly | You stop hunting for words. Pauses must come from thinking about the idea, not from assembling the sentence, and that is a fluency change, not a preparation change |
So on Listening and Reading the 7 to 8 work is accuracy work, not coverage work: nothing new to learn, five error habits to kill. On Writing and Speaking the work is invisible to you, because nobody sees their own systematic grammar error; if they could see it they would not make it. Ungraded essays at band 7 rehearse band 7.
The arithmetic decides before the study does
Your reported band is the mean of four skill scores, rounded — the full rounding rules are worth five minutes on their own: a mean ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, .75 to the next whole band, and any other mean goes to the nearest half or whole band. So 8 overall needs an average of 7.75. Work that through before booking anything.
- From 7 / 7 / 7 / 7 you need three whole bands of gain in total. Three skills to 8 with one left at 7, or two at 8 and two at 7.5.
- From 8 / 8 / 7 / 7 the mean is 7.5 and a single half band is not enough: 7.625 still prints as 7.5. You need a full band of gain, so one of those 7s has to become an 8, for 7.75 exactly, which prints as 8.
- From 7.5 / 7.5 / 6.5 / 7 the mean is 7.125, and lifting the 6.5 all the way to 8 gives only 7.5. That profile cannot reach 8 through one paper no matter how good the essay is.
Five minutes of that arithmetic reorders any plan, because the overall band does not care which skill moves. It also exposes the usual trap: grinding at the weakest skill on principle when the cheapest half band is sitting in Reading, where it is a timing fix.
A procedure, in order
- Read the requirement. Overall band, per-skill minimums, accepted test types, deadline. Write the four numbers down.
- Do the rounding. Take your current four scores, find every combination that reaches 7.75, and identify the cheapest one. If no single half band gets you there, you are planning a multi-skill campaign, not a tune-up.
- Check One Skill Retake. If exactly one paper is short, your original test was computer-delivered, you are inside the 60-day window and the receiving organisation accepts it, you can resit that one paper and keep the other three. That turns a four-paper problem into one paper — when a one-paper resit beats a full retake is a four-question decision.
- Diagnose the errors, not the band. For Listening and Reading, mark up the five wrong answers you can still afford and classify them: missed because of time, misheard detail, spelling, or genuinely not understood. Four different fixes. A free Reading and Listening diagnostic that breaks results down by question type is a quick way to get that error list without burning an official test.
- Build a graded loop for Writing and Speaking. Write the task, get it scored against all four criteria with reasons, rewrite it, check what moved. Two graded and rewritten essays a week beat ten ungraded ones, and nothing else reliably shifts the productive skills above 7.
So how long
At the average rate a half band is 200 to 240 hours of instruction, and above band 6 the same hours buy less, so a 7 to 8 attempt at 10 hours a week is measured in seasons, not weeks. If you need one half band in one paper and the failure is a diagnosed habit (running out of time in Reading, one recurring grammar pattern in Writing), it can be much shorter. If three skills must rise, treat six to twelve months as the working assumption.
Then ask the question once more. If the requirement is 7, an 8 is an expensive trophy: put those hours into the per-skill floor risk and sit the test. If the requirement really is 8, do the diagnostic and the arithmetic this week, because the calendar is the one part of this you cannot compress.
